Air Sealines Seaplane to Lefkas
Living in Scotland meant our travel arrangements to Greece left us with an overnight stay in southern England. Taking advantage of the budget prices through wegolo.com we would fly to Corfu than travel by coach to Lefkas (The next island down) Lefkas & Corfu does have direct flights from Scotland but the prices are much cheeper from England. So we frequently use the budget tickets to Corfu from England, this route being the cheepest.
We usually arrived in Corfu (late morning) then a Greek Taxi to the port, a local ferry to Igoumanitsa on the mainland (2hours), a coach to Lefkas (1.5hours, 4 times per day) and a Taxi (45mins) to our boat in Nidri, Lefkas.
This was an exhaustive way to go about it but we couldn’t find a more comfortable budget way to get there…
Until we used Air Sealines. Air Sealines are a seaplane service that operates between the Greek Islands and the mainland. Booking online was easy and simple, we were to fly to Corfu and take a taxi to Gouvia Marina, and there we would board our floatplane to Lefkas. We had two options, one was to take a later flight and fly direct to Lefkas, or go earlier and do a splash and dash in Paxos (we were told). Never being in a seaplane before we took the splash and dash route. The crew were polite there service was professional; with a typical Greek casualness to they’re in-flight briefing. If you are sick here is the bag in the back of the seat… The emergency exits are there and there and that’s about it… anything else just ask…
Our flight to Paxos was about 15 mins and the landing was smooth. We were surprised on how easily it was to manoeuvre the seaplane in the water. It seamed to be more manoeuvrable than a yacht with a bow thruster. On our arrival in Gios, Paxos. The plane would land then taxi down the small canal to its jetty in the harbour.
Time to stretch our legs… We weren’t tiered but the captain invited us to step off the plane and stretch our legs whilst they loaded new passengers. Back on board we were soon in the air and heading south to Lefkas. 30mins later we were on the town key at Lefkas watching the plane clime into the sky and on its way to Vathi, Ithaca.
Our tickets were about 50 euros each and not more than the cost of taxis and ferries from Corfu to Lefkas. Would we do it again? Very much yes… its quick, exciting and not that expensive in comparison. We also had more time to relax in comfort in the evening on the same day.
