Chilling in Frikas Harbor — Ithaca

boys jumping of Frikas quay into the seaWatching anywhere else is rude but here? No! Waiting for the local ferry from Lefkas to arrive here at Frikas harbour on Ithaca. We truly understood the nature of watching and waiting in comfort. The children are using the ferry ramp as a diving board, trying to see who can make the biggest splash or who can dive underwater the furthest. Frappe in hand (A cold instant coffee with ice) we watched and waited and observed and chilled for 2 hours in this fashion and never really felt the time go by.

Even in the heat of the day the colours here are graphic with a graduated blue sky. Haze in the distance, vivid green from the pine trees above, with patches of red from the sails in the harbour. All can be seen whilst we sheltered in a taverna from the sun. No matter how hot it gets, there’s always the water for a dip.

Frikas is on the north east side of Ithaca (Homer, Odysseus and Iliad fame) and is fast becoming a tourist destination for cyclists and trekking. Local ferries and activity-charted yachts disgorge their passengers on the key in Frikas with directions to Vathi the capital of Ithaca, where they’re picked up in the evening. Frikas has a small deep harbour so is also a popular haven for yachts. Their long deep fin keels it seams have no problems here.

Frikas gets so popular you can see yachts moored up in pontoon fashion, as the harbour is too deep to anchor. An hour ago we even saw the new ‘Easy Cruise’ ferry arrive at the harbour entrance whilst everyone on deck looked down into the harbour with they’re cameras flashing. Fortunately the harbour of Frikas is to small to cater for yachts bigger than 45ft. That’s probably why the ferry key is outside the harbour.
