Mini Market Saviour – Frikas, Ithaca.
Kiki is a treasure; she runs the minimarket on the waterfront in Frikas Harbour. Fluent in English (Husbands an Australian). When running into trouble with an old back injury. Kiki phoned the pharmacy in the next village ‘Stavros’ and offered to talk to the pharmacist to get the best anti –spasmodic that doesn’t need a prescription.
“I’ll call him Davey,” she says “and if there’s something I’ll get him to drop it off here for you.” This saved me a 2 km walk from the boat (What an angle) all I had to do was wait till the pharmacy closed in the evening and my cure would arrive.
Drugs arrived in the evening, Musco-Ril Thiocolchicoside” 5.50 euros of life saving relief or so I thought.
In Greece the drugs over the counter are more powerful and quite often the pharmacist will give good advice if the problem is simple. If you have a UK prescription and they can see it, they’ll provide the same here.
2 days later I’m still in a bad way. The drugs take the edge off the pain but I wont be moving far. It got so bad I called ‘Ionian Boat Assistance’ in Lefkas the next island up and my homeport. It’s agreed that a relief skipper would arrive by ferry the following morning and give me a hand with my boat up to Lefkas. At this time I could barely walk and the discomfort had turned into a spasmodic muscular vice around my lower back. Nothing I’d taken so far seem to free it off.
The following morning my skipper arrives and we’re off to Lefkas. My only real comfort was lying down by now. In Lefkas I’m whisked by a taxi all arranged by ‘Ionian Boat Assistance’ to Lefkas A&E and in a room for treatment within minutes. Muscular spasm of the lower facet joint was the problem ‘apparently’ and a muscle relaxant injection was the answer.
Lying on my front out of the corner of my eye and heading my way. Was the largest ‘Victorian’ syringe I’d seen in my life all polished and shining with removable test-tubes it seemed.…
