Calm before the storm — Kastos

View of Kalamos from Kastos harbour100 yards from the harbour of Kastos is ‘Windmill Taverna’ its prominent location provides a spectacular view. Looking north over the harbour entrance you can see the east coast of Kastos in the distance. The mainland is beyond but out of site, shrouded by the humpback whale of a mountain that’s Kalamos.

Looking east in the far distance is mainland Greece. Its gray-green coloured hills are scared with recent road construction that’s modernising the coastal road.

Looking south the ‘Dragonary’ Islands can be seen in various contrasts of gray governed by the distance and the haze. Looking further its possible to see Zakynthos on a much clearer day.

A yacht leaving Kastos harbour motors off into the distance leaving a ‘V’ shape pattern that stretches out to an extreme distance either side of the yacht.

The cool light breeze brings the smell of eucalyptus to our table. Dark red bougainvillea plants are dotted around ‘Windmill Taverna’ interspersed with dwarf palm tree shrubs in large round earthenware pots.

Dawn is worth waiting for at ‘Windmill Taverna’ facing east the Taverna is perfectly situated to see the dawn rise over Greece. A cool chill breeze surrounds us yet, looking south again a much stronger wind is heading are way judging by the patterns on the sea.

Kastos HarbourHeading back to our boat the crescendo of cicadas sound unusually loud. Yet absolute silence is never likely to happen on this living Island. Yannis and his friends are diving for fish off the end of the key. Dive bombing as Yannis describes it.

Bad weather is coming from the south our fellow yachtsmen inform us. “It would be wise to stay in Kastos for a couple of days.”

Within the hour the heat haze that lasted for weeks’ is cleared by the approaching storm and for the first time in weeks we batten down the hatches whilst inside.
