Igoumenitsa new port and bus facilities

ig_int_2Greek authorities have recently upgraded the Port of Igoumenitsa with a modern international terminal for passengers arriving from Italy. This includes a new 4-lane motorway stretching across northern Greece all the way to Istanbul. This is intended to connect Greece and Turkey to Europe’s motorway network.

The port of Igoumenitsa (North-western Greece) will receive a €44 million boost and will be linked to the Egnatia Motorway.

This €44 million investment has made Igoumenitsa a wealthy town with considerable facilities to offer the travelling backpacker. Its modern air-conditioned international terminal has all the major shipping lines represented under its roof and provides instant access to booking facilities and accommodation enquires. For the travelling backpacker the buildings air-conditioning is a welcoming respite from the sun before moving on to explore the rest of Greece.

agency_officesOutside the entrance/exit to the international terminal you’ll find many ticket agencies across the road with massive billboards showing the multiple shipping lines they represent. Competition is fierce so this could be the best place to see what’s on offer.

To travel further afield Igoumenitsa bus station has frequent buses to all parts of Greece with multiple daily schedules to Athens and back. All inter-city buses in Greece are air-conditioned and very comfortable, a far cry from the old Mercedes double clutch rust buckets that were forever being patched up and sent on their way.

Igoumenitsa_bus_stationThe bus terminal can be found about 400 yards north of the port on the water front behind the Cafe Bar ‘Chocolate’… this is where you find most of the travellers hanging out waiting for their bus in the sun. If you don’t mind the coast road traffic (Not to bad) this is a good place to look out on Igoumenitsa bay and watch the ships come and go. Long distance Bus timetables in Greece

Cafe Bar ‘Chocolate’ is a very good place to network and meet fellow travel companions. It’s a good spot to also wait for your ferry if you are heading to the Ionian Islands or even returning to Italy to see the rest of Europe.
