Anchoring stern to the quay with your lead crew ready to take your line and giving instructions over the radio or from the quay is standard practice. Looking at the video and knowing where the Sunsail base is. It looks as this is their second overnight spot. Things can only get better…

The most reassuring encounter any yachtsman can hope for is someone on the quay ready to take their lines. Mooring bows (or stern) to the quay is a tricky business but with George’s guidance it’s easy. You drop your anchor 4 boat lengths from the quay and hand over your lines to George as you approach.

George’s Taverna is at the end of the quay covered in red bougainvillea and dotted with blue chairs. Its strategic location makes a handy refuge for all your creature comforts. Our table is by the sea and wavelets of water are within reach of our feet. The sound of cicadas (crickets) are all around and make a heavy din. Ordering a tuna salad we receive Tzakziki but say nothing, were happy and don’t care. George’s son is an impresario with food it seams. Much to our surprise it has the taste of tune but looked exactly like Tzakziki.

Gentle waves lap near our feet as a Caique chugs off into the distance. On the quay George is back welcoming other yachts. The background hum of life and cicadas begins to mix and mingle with the smell of bougainvillea and the evening ambles on. Looking across the harbour, steep hills of solid rock rise 45 degrees all the way up to the top of the Island 700 feet above. Kalamos village and its man made harbour is perched precariously at its base.

It’s evening and the hills on the mainland are turning a steady orange from the setting sun. Here on Kalamos the sun is already shrouded by the hills above the harbour.

Arriving in Kalamos as early as we did ensured a leisurely afternoon, wind patterns can now be seen on the sea, dark patches denotes wind and lighter patches a calm. The harbour is filling now, boats are mooring stern to the quay and crossed anchors cause cross-reactions from some people. The wind’s beginning to pick up. Gusts of wind are tumble down the hillside and testing the boats anchors and their owners. Yet the alarm is all over within minutes and the serenity returns to Kalamos.
